A Call to Community: Join Us in Supporting Mālama Hulē‘ia in Kauai
Our dear friends from Mālama Hulē‘ia, a grassroots organization that restores the ancient watersheds Hulē‘ia River and Alakoko Fishpond asked us to help close a funding gap the current federal spending cuts have left open.
In the early years of the Common Ground Summit, Mālama Hulē‘ia, (those of you who joined us will remember Peleke Flores and Sara Bowen) wasn’t just a partner – they were a steady presence, a source of guidance, and one of the first to believe in what we were building.
Based on a foundation of traditional ecological knowledge and cultural practices, Mālama Hulē‘ia provides a real life example of how the systems that feed us can integrate culture and regenerative methodologies to teach and feed a local community.
Now, they’re reaching out for support and we wanted to share that invitation with you because we believe in this work, and in the people behind it.
Due to recent federal budget cuts, Mālama Hulē‘ia lost funding for a $575,000 amphibious excavator – a critical piece of equipment that would allow them to remove invasive mangrove, restore natural water flow, and expand restoration efforts across the island. They’ve already raised $200,000 and are looking to the wider community to help close the gap.
We’re inviting you to join us - whether it’s making a donation, sharing this with your network, or offering support in other ways, every bit helps.
It’s a chance to stand with a place, a project, and a community that continues to shape us all.
